FIHRM was established in 2010 at the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool (UK), which was its first headquarters. Continuing its international character, it is now coordinated from the Museum of Democracy in Argentina.
The Federation enables museums that address perpetually relevant and necessary themes like human rights to respect historical memory, commit to the present, and look towards the future by working together and sharing new ideas and initiatives in a supportive environment.
The initiative's spirit is rooted in the belief that all museums in this field face similar challenges when addressing fundamental and complex issues, as these institutions engage with and intervene in contemporary forms of racism, abuse, and discrimination. We propose working together proactively within the Federation because we believe that tackling these issues collectively is more effective than doing so individually.
